Social media considerations/ issues

 Social media considerations/ issues

Privacy: The ability to share private information on a public platform could pose a risk to the user as anyone can copy or download your photo's, video's, posts or know your location.

Censorship: Some censorship is necessary for the safety of its users against harmful or obscene content. But it is the definition of what is harmful or inappropriate content that currently lies with the site owners. A private social media company can currently remove any content without judicial process. Making large social media sites a public utility could help resolve some censorship issues by way of inserting an adversarial, judicial process whereby a user has the opportunity to defend the validity of their content under federal law instead of under a private set of terms and conditions.

Media Consolidation: News media diversity is a current issue in Australia on Facebook as the government has demanded that the site remunerate media companies for their content. Facebook's response to this demand was to block all news sites from Facebook in Australia. As the terms of this negotiation progress, individual media companies can make undisclosed agreements with Facebook which leaves powerful media companies with more leverage to have their content available. This leaves smaller, independent media outlets without the ability to provide enough financial intensive to Facebook to have their content available on the platform. Essential, more corporate owned, government friendly news will be available on Facebook and no independent news that provides a contrast will be allowed to post on the platform.
